The Film to Come
From the Movement of Speech to the Moving Image, to the Movement of Music
Through his films, Michel Lorand explores the relationships between speech, image, music, and time. From Stéphane Mallarmé to Hans Faverey, from Samuel Beckett to Morton Feldman, and from Cecil Taylor to Peter Ablinger, he proposes a “film to come”: a cinema in which movement would no longer belong solely to the relationship between image and speech, but a cinema in which music, far from being confined to illustrating the image, becomes a force that generates the film itself.

Nighttime
A film by Michel Lorand
(HD film, 52 min., colour, sound — no dialogue, 2026)
Music: Hanne De Backer
In Nighttime, baritone saxophonist Hanne De Backer engages with a structure based on repetition, memory, and forgetting. The film is built around a simple idea: to make the memory of sound itself audible. Each improvisation is both a creation and a distorted memory of the one before it. Layers of sound accumulate like strata of
memory, before gradually eroding.
