The Promise of the Screen presents The Promise of the Couch
In 1895, in Vienna, Freud and Josef Breuer jointly published “Studies on Hysteria”, the work that founded the discipline of psychoanalysis. In that same year in Paris, Louis Lumière projected “Leaving the Factory”, which is considered the first film in the history of cinema, at the Society for the Development of National Industry. Using dozens of film fragments, “The Promise of the Couch” shows how psychoanalytic method is exposed to film.
