Lubumbashi Biennale 2026: A conversation with Sorana Munsya (FR)
To mark the 9th edition of the Lubumbashi Biennale, ‘manger la terre / kukuria bulongo’ (15 October – 15 November 2026), WIELS welcomes Sorana Munsya, artistic director of this edition, for a presentation of the event’s programme and theme.
At 17:00, she will be in conversation with Sammy Baloji, visual artist and co-founder of the Picha Art Centre in Lubumbashi and of the Biennale, discussing the key issues underpinning the programme for this new edition.
Sorana Munsya, an independent curator based in Brussels, accepted an invitation from the Picha Art Centre to take on the artistic direction of this international contemporary art event. For the past decade, she has been developing projects informed by her research into African and diasporic narratives, including The Last Place They Thought Of (Kunsthal Mechelen, 2024), The Act of Breathing (Horst Festival / Kanal-Centre Pompidou, 2022) and Watermarks, Silent Traces (2021).
She will be joined by Sammy Baloji, visual artist and co-founder of the Picha Art Centre, and Jean-Sylvain Tshilumba Mukendi, project coordinator at Picha, to discuss the issues underpinning this year’s programme.
