Emma Verhulst (1994°) is a visual artist based in Antwerp. She studied at Sint Lucas Antwerp and has exhibited work at Plus One Gallery, Museum Dhondt Dhaens, MHKA, and Ponti. She participated in residency programs at Frans Masereel Center, WIELS, and upcoming at Cité Des Arts.
Emma draws for her work on observations, photographs, and found footage in the search for fiction and nonfiction, the interior and exterior, the collective and the personal, the simplicity and the spectacle. Her paintings are characterized by a visual language that evokes a familiar and estranged universe. The complex sensations of alienation, awkwardness, and (de)tachment are essential aspects. The work ultimately expresses an inability, the inevitable lack of absolute grammar and perfect agreement.
