Conversation: Ali Cherri and Helena Kritis at RendezVous (EN)
Ali Cherri works from a premise that runs through two decades of practice: matter remembers.
Curator Helena Kritis joins the artist to talk through the implications of that claim, framed by his new exhibition Soul Witness at WIELS.
This event takes place at Salon de RendezVous in the context of Brussels Art Week.
For Ali Cherri, earth, stone and other materials hold the residue of violence long after an event has passed. The body carries something of the same weight, shaped by whatever discipline or authority has acted on it.
In conversation with curator Helena Kritis, Cherri considers how institutions decide which histories survive, and why his work returns so often to ruins, treating collapse less as an ending than as one stage in a longer process of remaking.
