3.11 TSUNAMI 2011 is a series of video productions using raw video recordings of the tsunami attacks on March 11th, 2011, taken by people who live in three neighboring villages in Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. As an addition to this real-life documentation, photographer Ryuji Miyamoto interviewed with those who took the recordings and asked them about the situation at the time and also about their everyday lives prior to and after that catastrophic day.
It is difficult to say whether I can call these videos art works, since they consist only of the raw video recordings taken by the survivors and their interviews. Nevertheless, it may be the result of a sequence of collective impulses — both of the survivors’ and mine — which occurred spontaneously and exceeded the modernist frame of “individual expression.”
