Luc Tuymans is a leading figure of a new generation of figurative painters, at a time when the relevancy of painting is discredited by some who judge it unable to bear witness to our frantic contemporary society. Luc Tuymans' work deals precisely with stakes and contemporary challenges of painting, such as the reinterpretation of mass media images (press clippings, television etc) and their manipulation. The artist's work often explores questions related to history, memory and trauma, like Alina Szapocznikow, whose work Luc Tuymans included in the exhibition A Vision of Central Europe which he curated in Bruges in 2010.
Luc Tuymans is considered one of the most influencial artists of his generation. His work is included in many important museums such as The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Modern, London; or Centre Georges-Pompidou, Paris, among others.
Elena Filipovic is the co-curator of the retrospective of Alina Szapocznikow
