In 1966, Jef Geys developed his Sensorial Playbox (or “Gevoelsspeeldoos” in Dutch). It was tested for the first time at the State middle school in Balen. The aim was to teach young people with disabilities or learning difficulties both basic concepts of visual art, such as colour, shape, composition and lines, and knowledge of materials, such as hardness, softness, concrete, metal, wood, stone, etc. To this end, the feeling box contained building blocks of different colours and varying sizes.
50 years later, the Sensorial Playbox was tested in the Kasterlinden school in Sint-Agatha-Berchem. School Kasterlinden offers special education, where type 6, type 7 and type 9 are represented in four target groups: a vision group, a bilingual hearing group, a language group and an autism group. This school also has a nursery, primary and secondary section with education types 1, 2 and 3.
