In the frame of Masses, Oscar Murillo’s solo presentation currently on view at WIELS, the artist created an exclusive edition from colourful lottery tickets purchased in Brussels. Using both oil stick and an inky wash, Murillo intervenes with his characteristic mark-making, covering the tickets and their crucial prize-winning potential. It’s a playful gesture that explores the complex interplay between chance, leisure, economic disparity and the desire for upward mobility. They connect to his broader interests in notions of labour and social behaviour as evidenced in the WIELS installation.
